Vitamin D Helps PREVENT Breast Cancer

Breasthealth

Vitamin D is becoming a very important little vitamin!

It's been known for a while that Vitamin D is a key player in the overall health of many body organs and systems -- one of these systems is breast health, but more importantly, breast cancer prevention.

The reason *prevention* is so important is that we know what routes are available for treatment after a woman gets breast cancer, but to prevent it in the first place seems the ultimate goal. Afterall, not all breast cancer patients are survivors. In fact, according to Cancer.org, in 2009, approximately 40,170 women are expected to die from breast cancer. Only lung cancer accounts for more cancer deaths in women.

Vitamin D plays a key role in this very important prevention role. There are a few ways to increase your Vitamin D levels.

  • Supplement! Vitamin D is readily available in supplemental form. First, get an easy blood test from your doctor to determine your baseline levels. Based upon those results, you can determine your proper supplementation level.
  • Get outside! Exposure to UVB triggers the natural Vitamin D manufacturing process in our bodies. Moderate sun exposure also has other benefits such as increasing mood, as well. Just be careful to not burn and increase your risk of melanoma.

Turmeric Gives Peri-Menopausal Relief

Turmeric

Turmeric is a great natural healing remedy for some symptoms of peri-menopause and menopause. It is liberally used in Indian curries and other near-east Asian cooking.

The therapeutic agent in turmeric is curcumin and is known to have great health benefits including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Recently, a powerful phytoestrogen called diarylheptanoid has been discovered in curcumin. These phytoestrogens mimic estrogen produced naturally in our bodies and can boost those natural levels which wane as women approach menopause.

A particularly annoying aspect of peri-menopause and menopause is vaginal dryness. Adding turmeric regularly to your diet can help. Add a teaspoon to a creamy salad dressing, or add to things like risotto, or sauces and gravies. If you don't like the flavor in your cooking, or don't eat foods with turmeric that frequently, you can supplement with 1000mg curcumin daily.

I have been having peri-menopausal symptoms for a while now and intend to add some curcumin to my daily supplement regimen. I am curious to see if vaginal dryness in particular is alleviated.

Take Care of Your Teeth to Maintain Memory!

Dentures1

A new study from Japan published in December, 2010 in Behavioral and Brain Functions discovered that tooth loss can put you at a higher risk of dementia.

It suggests that gingivitis or other gum infections (ultimately resulting in tooth loss) can cause inflammatory substances which can affect the brain resulting in brain cell death and consequent memory loss.

The upshot - brush and floss those pearly whites!

Exercise for Arthritis

You may have heard a common urban myth that if you have osteoarthritis, you can damage your joints further if you exercise.

This is complete rubbish! The fact is, regular moderate exercise keeps joints lubricated and maintains range of motion which reduces pain. There isn't a more natural healing remedy than that!

Additionally, as Dr. Mercola points out:

Arthritis rates are more than twice as high in obese people as those who are normal weight, because the extra weight puts more pressure on your joints. This can not only lead to osteoarthritis, it can also make the condition exponentially worse.

So if you are suffering from arthritis and are overweight or obese, losing weight is an essential form of treatment.

Exercise benefits the body as a whole -- physically, mentally and emotionally. Hm... a walk with the doggies is sounding really good about now! How about you? How will you exercise today?
