Turmeric is a great natural healing remedy for some symptoms of peri-menopause and menopause. It is liberally used in Indian curries and other near-east Asian cooking.
The therapeutic agent in turmeric is curcumin and is known to have great health benefits including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Recently, a powerful phytoestrogen called diarylheptanoid has been discovered in curcumin. These phytoestrogens mimic estrogen produced naturally in our bodies and can boost those natural levels which wane as women approach menopause.
A particularly annoying aspect of peri-menopause and menopause is vaginal dryness. Adding turmeric regularly to your diet can help. Add a teaspoon to a creamy salad dressing, or add to things like risotto, or sauces and gravies. If you don't like the flavor in your cooking, or don't eat foods with turmeric that frequently, you can supplement with 1000mg curcumin daily.
I have been having peri-menopausal symptoms for a while now and intend to add some curcumin to my daily supplement regimen. I am curious to see if vaginal dryness in particular is alleviated.
